See how Husna is thriving on a degree apprenticeship at Nottingham Trent University

Husna Gul is a degree apprentice at Nottingham Trent University - meaning she can study her degree in Civil Engineering while also working four days a week for a Nottingham engineering firm.

Husna, 20, started her degree apprenticeship when she joined Dice Consulting based in the Lace Market and run by Wayne Oakes, himself a Nottingham Trent University alumnus, and Raj Somal.

Husna had decided the apprenticeship route was for her while she was studying her A levels in Chemistry, Physics and Maths at The West Bridgford School.

A practical learner, she found out about degree apprenticeships while researching universities and future career paths, and felt it was the best fit for her.

At the small Nottingham firm she is benefitting from one-to-one support from her managers, helping her apply the knowledge she is learning at university.

And she is able to save while she studies, so much so she is helping out her younger sister who is studying at university in Birmingham.

“Starting a Civil Engineering apprenticeship I’ve developed in many ways. I’ve become more confident. I am a practical person and being paid to learn and getting on-the-job experience is better for me.”
