Nottingham Civic Exchange

Nottingham Civic Exchange was established by Nottingham Trent University to maximise research, policy and practical impact.

It is a collaborative think tank based within the School of Social Sciences – one that commits the expertise of its staff and students to the key social and economic questions of our place.

The Civic Exchange brings together university expertise with partners seeking to address the needs of local communities. It facilitates debate, acts as a bridge between research and policy debates and develops practical projects on the ground.

One focus of its work since launching in 2017 has been on the households who are ‘just about managing’. This resulted in the “Out of the Ordinary” report, published in partnership with the RSA and looking at the income, make-up and struggles of households falling into this category in the city and county.

Research from NTU academics has then explored different contributing factors discovered in that first phase of work including looking at economic insecurity, the current picture of employment, and how health and wellbeing play a part in work.
