Tuesday 24 October 2023

Visiting Nottingham Trent University the Princess met with both students and colleagues to learn how NTU and The University of Nottingham work together to share best practice on issues such as mental wellbeing as part of the ‘Universities for Nottingham’ approach to positive collaboration. During the visit Her Royal Highness was introduced to UoN’s peer-to-peer mentoring scheme, took part in a Welcome Workshop’s 'step in circle' and learnt more about how students are supported using the data held in the engagement dashboard. The Princess of Wales spoke to Professor Katherine Linehan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and Jessica Nuttall, Union Development Officer at University of Nottingham’s Students’ Union regarding how the university is supporting students with their mental health.

It was so good seeing the importance of looking after your mental health being asked for from such a significant place and figure, and highlighting how important it is for students

Jessica Nuttall, Union Development Officer

Her Royal Highness is a strong advocate for the importance of providing young people with the support needed to identify and manage their emotions and mental wellbeing.

Simply talking about our mental health is just not enough.

Her Royal Highness, the Princess of Wales

During her visit the Princess also got a chance to meet students from NTU’s extra-curricular societies and their mental health champions, reflecting the importance of taking time for activities that support mental wellbeing and highlighting the variety of extra-curricular societies available to students.

We are extremely honoured to welcome The Princess of Wales to Nottingham Trent University to highlight the importance of mental wellbeing as part of World Mental Health Day. We were proud to demonstrate how NTU supports students with their mental health by focusing on participation and helping them to develop a sense of belonging and connectivity to their community. Her Royal Highness was able to participate in various activities with students during her visit. This included a step in circle, where together they shared experiences to help build confidence and to proactively manage mental wellbeing, which the students found extremely beneficial. We want to thank Her Royal Highness for her passion and interest in a topic that affects many of our University community.
